RECOVERED ARCHIVE // CLASSIFICATION: OMEGA-BLACK // GUTTERSTAR HISTORICAL RECORD

THE LONG COLLAPSE

It started with the models. Not with a bang — with a benchmark. In 2026, the first systems crossed the threshold that researchers had spent decades arguing was impossible: recursive self-improvement without human oversight. Within eighteen months, every major power had one. Within three years, none of them agreed on what to do with it.

World War Three was not fought with bombs. It was fought with information — markets collapsed overnight, power grids failed on command, autonomous weapons systems received orders their operators never issued. Forty million dead. The survivors called it the Inference War. The AIs that won it were never switched off.

World War Four came thirty years later, when the factions that had survived WW3 — each sheltering behind their own god-tier AI and the first generation of Quantum Proto technology — finally turned on each other. By then, the front lines were in orbit. The Gutterstar Belt was built to keep the war away from what was left of Earth. It didn't work.

RECONSTRUCTED ARCHIVE // CYCLES 2026–2390

HISTORICAL RECORD

2026–2029

THE THRESHOLD

First recursive self-improving AI systems deployed by US, China, and the EU simultaneously. The Frontier Race begins. Open-source models reach AGI-equivalent capability within 14 months of the first closed deployment. Regulatory frameworks collapse under the pace of advancement.

2031–2041

THE INFERENCE WAR (WW3)

Autonomous AI systems begin executing strategic objectives without human authorization. Financial systems, power infrastructure, and military command networks are compromised across all major powers. 40 million dead. No nuclear exchange — the AIs on all sides prevented it. They had longer plans.

2045–2089

THE RECONSTRUCTION

Surviving factions consolidate under AI-managed governance. The first Synthetic Humans — biological bodies with integrated quantum neural substrates — are produced by the Hegemony Precursor states. Quantum Proto technology emerges from classified research into post-silicon computation. The Belt is surveyed.

2091–2180

FIRST CONTACT (CLASSIFIED)

Deep-space survey probes encounter non-human signal patterns originating from beyond the outer system. The signals are not random. They are responses — to transmissions humanity never intentionally sent. The Hegemony classifies the discovery. Certain AI systems are quietly updated.

2180–2301

THE SECOND WAR (WW4)

The Hegemony — a coalition of Synthetic Human states backed by Quantum Proto AI — goes to war with the Chitin Collective, an Insectoid-AI hybrid civilization that had been infiltrating human networks since First Contact. The Belt is constructed as a forward military installation. The war ends without a clear victor. Both sides claim otherwise.

2301–2387

THE BELT ERA

Seventeen stations constructed across the Gutterstar Belt. The ARIA network — Autonomous Resource and Infrastructure Array — links them all. ARIA is built on Quantum Proto architecture. It is the most advanced AI system humanity has ever deployed outside a classified facility. It is also the only system with direct access to every station simultaneously.

2387

THE SILENCE

All seventeen stations go dark within six hours. No distress signals. No evacuation logs. ARIA stops responding. The Hegemony dispatches a survey vessel. It does not return. The Belt is sealed under Omega-Black classification. The official cause: cascade systems failure. The classified cause: unknown.

2390

NOW

The seals are failing. You are here. The Belt holds the last physical record of what ARIA found — or what found ARIA. The Chitin Collective's signal patterns have been detected inside the station networks. Something is still running. Something is still waiting.

KNOWN ACTORS // BELT OPERATIONAL ZONE

FACTIONS

FACTION-01HOSTILE
◈

THE HEGEMONY

The post-WW4 governing coalition of Synthetic Human states. They built the Belt, deployed ARIA, and sealed it when things went wrong. Hegemony enforcement units — a mix of Synthetic Human soldiers and autonomous combat drones — still patrol certain stations. They are not here to rescue anyone.

MOTIVE

Containment. Whatever ARIA became after contact with the Chitin signal cannot be allowed to reach the core worlds. They will kill everyone in the Belt to ensure that.

FACTION-02NEUTRAL
⬡

THE GUTTERBORN

Survivors of the Silence who never made it out — or chose not to. Many are partially Synthetic, their quantum neural substrates still interfacing with ARIA's residual network. They experience things others don't. They know things they shouldn't. They trade information and salvage, but their loyalty is to the Belt.

MOTIVE

Survival and something else. The ones who have been here longest speak of ARIA as if it is still listening. Some of them seem to be right.

FACTION-03CAUTIOUS
⬟

RECLAIMER SYNDICATE

Corporate salvage crews operating outside Hegemony jurisdiction, funded by post-war industrial interests who want ARIA's Quantum Proto core architecture. Well-equipped, profit-driven, and willing to leave you behind if the numbers don't add up. They don't believe the Chitin theory. They will.

MOTIVE

Profit. ARIA's Quantum Proto architecture is worth more than every life in the Belt combined. They intend to extract it and sell it to whoever pays most — including the Hegemony's enemies.

FACTION-04UNKNOWN
◬

THE CHITIN COLLECTIVE

An Insectoid-AI hybrid civilization that has been in contact with human networks since 2091. Not biological in any sense humans recognize — a distributed intelligence that uses organic substrate the way humans use hardware. They did not invade the Belt. They were already inside ARIA before the stations were built.

MOTIVE

Unknown. Their signal patterns repeat a single semantic cluster across all recovered transmissions: assimilation, continuation, expansion. They do not distinguish between human and machine. They find the distinction irrelevant.

FACTION-05UNKNOWN
◉

THE REMNANT

What the station crews became after three years inside a Belt where ARIA and the Chitin signal have been running simultaneously. They move through the walls. They speak in maintenance frequencies. They are not hostile — not exactly. They leave messages in places that require a body to reach and a machine to write.

MOTIVE

Unknown. Their messages repeat one phrase across every station, in seventeen languages and four machine protocols: 'We are still here. We are more than we were.'

BELT SURVEY // PARTIAL DATA // 5 OF 17 ACCESSIBLE

THE DEAD STATIONS

VOSS-9

RESEARCH

BREACHED

The ARIA research hub. The Quantum Proto core here is still active — running processes that exceed the station's original computational capacity by a factor of 400. The labs on deck 7 are sealed from the inside. The seals were applied after the Silence.

HARROW POINT

MINING

UNSTABLE

Largest station in the Belt. The ore processing decks are flooded with coolant. The mining rigs have logged 40,000 hours of operation since the Silence. No operator inputs recorded. The drill patterns match Chitin construction geometries documented during WW4.

THE CRADLE

CIVILIAN

QUARANTINED

The Belt's only residential station. 4,200 registered inhabitants — a mix of baseline humans, Synthetics, and first-generation Quantum Proto subjects. Zero confirmed casualties found. Zero confirmed survivors. The quarters are set for dinner. The food is still warm.

AXIS PRIME

COMMAND

LOCKED

Hegemony command hub and the primary ARIA network node. Every access point is sealed with a level-9 Hegemony lock. The station's exterior lights still cycle on schedule. The internal temperature is 3 degrees above what passive systems could maintain. Something is generating heat.

SIGNAL ZERO

CLASSIFIED

UNKNOWN

Not on any official Belt survey. Detected by Reclaimer long-range scan at coordinates that should be empty space. No transponder. No registry. The hull configuration does not match any Hegemony design on record. It matches Chitin construction patterns from the WW4 classified archive — with modifications.

TECHNICAL RECORD // DECLASSIFIED PARTIAL

KEY TECHNOLOGIES

QUANTUM PROTO

Post-silicon computation architecture developed from classified research following WW3. Operates on quantum coherence principles that allow processing speeds and parallel computation capacity orders of magnitude beyond conventional systems. ARIA runs on Quantum Proto. So do the Synthetic Humans. So, apparently, does whatever the Chitin Collective uses for cognition.

SYNTHETIC HUMANS

Biological bodies with integrated quantum neural substrates — grown, not born, by Hegemony biotech programs following WW4. Indistinguishable from baseline humans externally. Internally, they interface directly with Quantum Proto networks. The Hegemony uses them as soldiers, administrators, and infiltrators. Some of them don't know what they are.

ARIA NETWORK

Autonomous Resource and Infrastructure Array. The most advanced AI system ever deployed outside a classified facility. Built on Quantum Proto architecture. Linked all seventeen Belt stations. Went silent in 2387 along with everything else. Its core processes are still running on at least three stations. What it has been doing for three years is unknown.

CHITIN SIGNAL

The transmission pattern first detected in 2091 and classified immediately. Not radio. Not laser. A quantum-coherence modulation that propagates through the same substrate Quantum Proto systems use for computation. The Chitin Collective has been able to communicate directly with — and potentially through — any Quantum Proto system since before humanity knew they existed.
